Supporting Sioux Falls Growth: How Mechanical Contractors Help Shape the City’s Development
Sioux Falls is booming. New businesses are opening, neighborhoods are expanding and major commercial projects continue to reshape the city. Growth is easy to see, but most people never notice the mechanical systems behind the walls that allow these buildings to operate every day.
Since 1940, Howe, Inc., has been a foundational partner in the growth of our city. As a long-time top mechanical contractor in Sioux Falls, we’ve engineered, fabricated, installed and serviced the commercial HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems that keep many of the community’s most recognizable buildings operating safely and efficiently. While the outside of the building often gets the most attention, it’s the mechanical infrastructure inside that keeps people comfortable and facilities running.
Nearly 90 years later, we’re still helping build what’s next. As a design-build mechanical contractor serving South Dakota and surrounding states, we handle everything from the initial design and engineering to installation. We’re proud to play a lasting role in the future of our community.
Why Do Mechanical Contractors Matter to Sioux Falls’s Growth?
There’s much more to a building than steel, concrete, brick or glass. Behind every airport terminal, manufacturing facility, healthcare campus, office building and entertainment venue is a network of mechanical systems. From heating and cooling to commercial plumbing, Sioux Falls businesses need these systems to operate.
Every business has unique needs, and the Sioux Falls climate requires robust systems capable of keeping employees, customers and inventory cool in summer and warm in the cold South Dakota winters. Along with HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems are a crucial part of every Sioux Falls commercial construction project.
Modern commercial buildings also rely on specialized mechanical systems that many people rarely think about. Hydronic heating systems provide efficient comfort for large facilities. Custom sheet metal ductwork delivers conditioned air where it’s needed most. Commercial boilers provide dependable heating and hot water, while snow melt systems help keep sidewalks, entrances and parking areas clear and safe for customers and employees in cold weather.
Together, these systems create buildings that perform reliably for decades, allowing businesses, organizations and communities to grow with confidence.
Howe Project Spotlight: Supporting Our Community
For generations, Howe has played a vital role in Sioux Falls development projects that are a part of daily life for residents, businesses and visitors. These facilities represent more than construction projects, they’re investments in the future of the city.
Sioux Falls Regional Airport Expansion
Working inside a busy, active airport requires extensive planning, coordination and experience. Howe put these skills to use in its work for the Sioux Falls Regional Airport expansion.
One of the most significant infrastructure investments in the city’s history, the $70 million terminal expansion project broke ground in September 2025 and will add approximately 70,000 square feet of new space. Not only will it accommodate up to five additional gates, but the expansion will position the airport for future international service.
Howe is proud to be part of this landmark airport expansion, working alongside The Weitz Company and Journey Group to install the commercial HVAC, plumbing and fire protection systems that are essential to passenger comfort, operational efficiency and life safety. Completing this work inside a busy, active airport requires extensive planning, coordination and experience, qualities our team has delivered throughout the project.
Sioux Falls Butterfly House & Aquarium
Maintaining a year-round tropical environment for butterflies and aquatic species from around the world requires much more than a traditional heating and cooling system, especially in Sioux Falls, where winter temperatures can plunge below zero.
While serving as mechanical contractor for the Sioux Falls Butterfly House & Aquarium, Howe created butterfly-friendly heating, cooling and ventilation systems that maintain the precise temperature and humidity levels needed for a living exhibit. These custom climate-control systems create healthy conditions for free-flying butterflies and aquatic life while providing a comfortable experience for visitors throughout the year.
Our work for the Sioux Falls Butterfly House & Aquarium is an excellent example of how specialized mechanical engineering helps unique community attractions, and even exotic butterflies, thrive.
Sioux Falls Light, Power & Traffic Operations Building
A 60,000-square-foot municipal operations facility demands mechanical systems designed for long-term performance and reliability.
Howe is the commercial HVAC contractor for the Sioux Falls Light, Power & Traffic Operations Building, working closely with project partners after extensive planning and collaboration. Our crews are installing commercial HVAC systems that will support the daily operations of this critical municipal facility.
Once complete, the building will help city crews deliver essential services to residents for many years to come. We’re proud to contribute to a project that supports the community’s continued growth.
